Oolong tea extracts help combat breast cancer: Study

If you are a tea lover then there is good news for you as a team of researchers have found that oolong tea extracts can have many health benefits apart from preventing breast cancer.

Oolong tea is a type of Chinese tea which has benefits for heart and brain and also prevents diabetes.

Laboratory tests showed that the Chinese tea, used for centuries for its supposed health benefits, stopped the growth of breast cancer cells and the extract hampered the DNA of the cancer cells, inhibiting the growth and progression of tumours.

Green tea also showed similar promise. However, black and dark tea had little effect on the cells, as per the study.

From our results, oolong tea, much like green tea, plays a role in inhibiting breast cancer cell growth, proliferation and tumour progression, said one of the researchers from St. Louis University in Missouri.

Oolong tea, same as green tea, can induce DNA damage and cleavage, play an inhibitory role in breast cancer cell growth, proliferation and tumorigenesis. It has great potential as a chemopreventive agent against breast cancer, the team added.

Furthermore, researchers analysed the rates of breast cancer and deaths from the disease across China.

Findings, published in the journal Anticancer Research, showed that regions with high oolong tea consumption had generally lower rates of the disease.

The team also found that the incidence of breast cancer in the Fujian province was 35 per cent lower than the national average.

The death rate of high consumers of oolong tea in Fijian was 68 per cent lower than the national average, findings further revealed.

"The lower incidence and mortality in regions with higher oolong tea consumption indicate that the tea has great potential for its anti-cancer properties," said lead author Chunfa Huang, Associate Research Professor at the varsity.

Prevention and early diagnosis was key to improving future health prospects, the study said.

Pandya will come out stronger: Kohli

India captain Virat Kohli on Monday said all-rounder Hardik Pandya will come out a "better cricketer" after making a comeback to the side following his sexist remarks on a television show.

Pandya, who is still facing an inquiry for his loose talk on women, took two crucial wickets and a brilliant catch to send back skipper Kane Williamson as India clinched the ODI series by winning the third match against New Zealand by seven wickets.

"In life, there are only two ways to deal with a situation like that. Either you hit rock bottom or you can learn from the situation and see it as a motivation to make things right," Kohli told reporters.

"For a cricketer, there is nothing more dear than the game. You put all your energy in the game, if you respect the game, the game will respect you back. There is no rocket science."

The Indian captain said Pandya is already on his road to redemption.

"You don't need do anything extra (in a situation like Pandya's). Whoever comes out of it positive, his career can scale new heights, like we have seen with many cricketers in the past.

"I hope he goes on that right path and emerges as a better cricketer and I think he can do that," said Kohli.

Pandya was sent back home from Australia earlier this month after the BCCI suspended him and opener Lokesh Rahul pending an inquiry.

The Committee of Administrators (CoA) then revoked their interim suspension last week and now their fate will be decided by an Ombudsman to be appointed by the Supreme Court.

Kohli said any team in the world would love to have Pandya.

"It is very very good to have him. He provides balance to the team. The way he bowled today showed that he went back and was practising his skills. You can tell with his intensity, he picked up two crucial wickets as well.

"He is someone who will give you those important contributions in all three departments. The team also looks much more balanced with him around. He is in a good head space and I hope he can continue with that," added Kohli.

Pilot had 'emotional breakdown' before Nepal plane crash that killed 51

The pilot of a US-Bangla Airlines plane that crashed in Nepal, killing 51 people aboard last March "seemed to have an emotional breakdown", according to a final report on the Himalayan nation's worst aviation disaster in 26 years.

The flight carrying 71 people from Bangladesh's capital Dhaka caught fire as it landed in Kathmandu. It was initially thought that poor communication with air traffic control was to blame for the disaster.

But investigators now say the pilot was ranting to crew members and even smoking in the cockpit, due to stress, the BBC reported.

Nepal's Accident Investigation Commission said in its report that the 52-year-old captain of US-Bangla Airlines flight BS211 was "very much emotionally disturbed and stressed" because a female colleague, who was not on board the plane, had "questioned his reputation" as a good flight instructor.

Investigators say the pilot's vocal pitch and the language he was using "indicated that he was agitated and experiencing high levels of stress" even when speaking to ground control in Dhaka before take-off.

According to the black box voice recorder and reports from surviving passengers, the pilot smoked in the cockpit and "engaged in unnecessary, unprofessional and lengthy conversation even in the critical phase" of the flight.

The pilot was released from the Bangladeshi Air Force in 1993 because of depression, the report said, but was later declared fit to fly civilian aircraft.

"This state of mind with high degree of stress and emotional state might have led him to all the procedural lapses. This, together with the failure on the part of both the crew to follow the standard operating procedure at the critical stage of the flight, contributed to the loss of situational awareness," the report said.

It added that the 25-year-old first officer may have been reluctant to be more assertive during the final approach and landing because of the captain's experience and authority.

Because they had lost "situational awareness", the crew failed to realise the flight had deviated from its intended path until it was too late.

They missed the runway at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport and ended up flying in an incorrect position in the dangerous mountainous terrain.

Both pilots, the two cabin crew and 47 passengers died as a result of the accident.

ICC urges whistleblowers to come forward as amnesty period nears end

The International Cricket Council's (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit on Monday issued a reminder, urging the cricket fraternity to report any corrupt practices in Sri Lankan cricket as the 15-day amnesty period ends on Thursday.

"As we approach the end of our 15-day amnesty period for those who previously failed to report information regarding corrupt approaches in Sri Lankan cricket, I would like to thank everyone who has come forward to share information," Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager, Anti-Corruption, said in a statement.

"We have seen a positive response with several people providing new and important information. This has assisted existing investigation and resulted in some new cases.

"In the final few days, I would request the cricket fraternity to come forward and share any other information concerning corrupt conduct or approaches in the strictest of confidence, and without any fear or repercussion," he added.

Earlier, the ICC had announced a 15-day amnesty from January 16-31 to participants who had previously failed to report corruption-related offences in Sri Lankan cricket.

Under this amnesty, reporting a previous corrupt approach now would not result in any punishment for the player.

Bihar Minister says Priyanka 'child' compare to Modi

 Days after a senior BJP leader and Bihar Minister Vinod Narain Jha said Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is very beautiful but has no other talent, another party leader and Bihar Minister Pramod Kumar on Sunday said newly-appointed Congress General Secretary is still a "bachchi" (child).

"Priyanka is still a child... If Congress want to compete with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it should bring Sonia Gandhi in the field," said Pramod Kumar, who is the state Tourism Minister.

Kumar further said the Congress leaders and workers are seeing a reflection of Indira Gandhi in Priyanka, and earlier, they were seeing reflection of Indira Gandhi in Sonia Gandhi.

"Congress should put up Sonia against Modi in elections because her age is near about Modi's age. But Priyanka is still a child."

Last Thursday, Jha said: "Priyanka Gandhi is very beautiful, but has no other talent. She is a novice in politics. She must be what, 37-38, or maybe older, 44. Till this age, she has no political achievement. Yes, she is good looking, God has given her that. But how much can she exploit that?"

After that leaders of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress and the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) had attacked Jha for making demeaning remarks against Priyanka Gandhi and demanded his apology.

Indonesia Masters: Saina crowned champion as Marin withdraws after injury

Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal was crowned champion of the Indonesia Masters 2019 on Sunday after her opponent Carolina Marin pulled out of the summit clash due to an injury.

Marin, the reigning Olympic champion and three-time world champion, twisted her right knee after landing awkwardly following a smash in the first game itself.

The Spanish shuttler was leading 10-4 before her discomfort and pain made her pull out of the mega final.

Saina was the runner-up in the 2018 edition of the Indonesia Masters.
