World in the grip of Hunger; Acute food shortage looms large

About 25 countries are set to face devastating levels of hunger in coming months, along with the low and middle income countries because of the fallout from the Coronavirus pandemic, according to the Early Warning Analysis of Acute Food Security Hotspots, compiled by the World Food Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organisation.

UN Humanitarian Chief calls for more funds to help the poor

Stating that COVID-19 pandemic and resulting recession is set to trigger the first increase in global poverty in three decades, UN Humanitarian Chief Mark Lowcock has called on G20 nations to step up support, as he released an updated 10.3 billion dollar appeal to fight the pandemic in 63 low-income countries.

Universe is 13.8 million years old

The scientists have discovered that the universe is about 13.8 million years old, which sheds light on better understanding the origins of the universe, how the universe may end, where we are going and when that ending may occur.

A group of scientists concluded the age by studying the image of the oldest light in the universe. The Atacama Cosmology Telescope measures the oldest light in the universe, known as the cosmic microwave background. The 140 team of scientists calculated the age of the universe by calculating these measures.  The researchers from the Princeton University led the research.

India calls for reformed multilateralism in post-COVID-19 world

Stating that the path to achieve sustainable peace and prosperity is through multilateralism, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said called for a ‘reformed multilateralism’ in a post-COVID-19 world, which reflects the realities of the contemporary world.

Modi  said this while delivering a keynote address virtually at this year’s High-Level Segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) session on Friday, July 17, at the United Nations in New York.

Space journey increases brain size

Human brain grows in space flights. This is what scientists have now researched and published in Radiology journal. Long term space flights will actually make the brains physically bigger, the researchers said.

They said that the grey matter, white matter and the cerebrospinal fluid around the brain grows. The researchers claimed that chronic exposure to intracranial pressure in spaceflight could be a factor that leads to bigger brains.  [ Read more.... ]

Over 25% of Covid-19 patients recover globally; Indian recovery rate is just 14%

The world is still reeling under the #Covid_19 pandemic, with over 22,50,757 cases and 154,266 deaths as of this morning. But, the good news is that the recovery is also picking up, with 5,71,145 people beating the deadly virus to come back to life.
