A new study published in The Lancet reveals alarming trends in the obesity epidemic in the United States. It forecasts that by 2050, more than 80% of adults will be classified as overweight or obese. Nearly 60% of adolescents will also fall into these categories.
The study synthesizes body mass index (BMI) data from 132 sources in the US. These include national and state-representative surveys. It paints a stark picture of the future if current trends continue. In 2021, nearly half of adolescents in the US were classified as overweight or obese. Three-quarters of adults were also classified this way. This marks a sharp rise compared to 1990. By 2050, these figures are expected to grow.
